According to NBC Connecticut, the school board voted 7-1 to not change the Enfield High School graduation date, which is scheduled for Saturday, June 25.
On April 12, Patrick Knighton, senior class president, had asked the school board to change the graduation date because it conflicted with his religious beliefs.
Knighton told the school board that as a Seventh-day Adventist, he does not participate in "business or business-related activities" from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.
According to NBC Connecticut, "parents of other students complained to the board that family members had already made flight arrangements" and couldn't change them.
Since Knighton is class president, his job during graduation is to give a speech and lead the class in turning their tassels. The school board suggested that he videotape the speech so they can play it during graduation, NBC Connecticut reported.
After the school board's decision, Knighton wrote, "In America the majority rules :)( Can't control it, Can't fight it, Must live with it."

In Connecticut, a high school senior class president is asking his school to change the graduation date because it is on a Sabbath.
During a school board meeting on April 12, Patrick Knighton explained his dilemma to the board.
Knighton told the school board that as a Seventh-day Adventist, he does not participate in "business or business-related activities" from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.
According to an article by the Enfield Patch, the Enfield High School graduation was scheduled for Saturday, June 25 due to the number snow days this year.
The school board decided not to set a specific date for graduation just yet. Enfield Patch reports that a meeting will try to be set up in a few days to talk about the situation. More info.

This is an interesting dilemma. Patrick has stood for his values. Those coming to grad already had their flights booked. His response shows he has an understanding of democracy. It is important to be gracious. In this case, the problem is real and seems impossible to solve.
